Bespoke and Ready to Wear headpieces designed and created by Alison Mary Millinery
So, you have made one of the biggest decisions of your life - choosing your wedding dress. With so many options available, it can be overwhelming to know where to start! After you select that perfect dress, the next question is what bridal accessories will you wear? Again, with countless choices, narrowing it down can be a challenge. To help, I’ve put together a handy guide filled with inspiration and ideas.
How to Select Accessories for Your Wedding Dress
Choosing the right accessories can enhance your wedding dress beautifully. The right pieces not only compliment your dress but also reflect your personal style. Below, you'll find my insights on how to select the ideal bridal headpiece for various wedding dress styles.
Fairy Tale Inspired Dresses
Wedding dresses with big skirts evoke a princess vibe. They pair wonderfully with tiara-style bridal headpieces. Anything featuring pearls, crystals, or beading looks particularly lovely with these types of wedding dresses. The bridal headbands I’ve created below showcase glass pearl beads, freshwater pearls, and delicate organza flowers.

Boho/Flowing Dresses
Bohemian wedding dresses open up a world of styles. They often suit delicate flower crowns or pretty vine headpieces. A simple flower comb can also add a romantic touch. The emphasis should be on creating a relaxed look. It should feel like the bridal headpiece was casually placed on the head, avoiding heavy pins or excessive hairspray.

Vintage Dresses
The vintage style encompasses an array of decades. Consider the 1920s or 1930s with their bias-cut wedding dresses. Think about the 1940s with structured gowns, 1950s full skirts, or the flowing 1970s hippie styles. These timeless designs can beautifully inspire your wedding look.
1920s/1930s Wedding Dresses
One of my favourite periods are dresses from this era which really suit beaded headbands. Worn across the forehead or the back of the head, these bands can add an elegant touch. Incorporating vintage jewellery can enhance that classic look.

1940s Wedding Dresses
This era favoured long sleeves with gathered shoulders, nipped-in waists, and elegant long skirts. I designed my own wedding dress inspired by this style. Headpieces often featured crowns in halo shapes, adorned with flowers, pearls, or lace.

1950s Wedding Dresses
This glamorous period embraced full skirts, petticoats, and nipped-in waists. These gowns pair beautifully with birdcage veils, bows, and stylish headbands.

1960s Wedding Dresses
Pillbox wedding hats were a stylish choice during this era. I enjoy creating mini versions, which have gained popularity. They compliment short, simple dresses beautifully, sometimes with detachable veils for varied looks.

1970s Wedding Dresses
Long flowing dresses with sleeves and ruffles defined this period. The styles often inspire today’s boho looks. They pair wonderfully with flower crowns, ribbons, and other unstructured headpieces.
