So you have made one of the biggest decisions of your life (along with actually deciding to getting married!) What wedding dress you will wear on your special day and with so many options available it's difficult to know where to start! However, once the dress has been chosen then the next decision is what accessories will you wear? Again, with so many options its hard to narrow it all down. So I have put together a handy blog to give some inspirations and ideas.
WHICH STYLE OF WEDDING HEADPIECE WILL COMPLEMENT MY DRESS?
Below I have listed some wedding dress styles and my ideas on what might suit them using my own Alison Mary Millinery bridal headpieces and images of previous brides. These are not set in stone and is just meant as an easy, fun guide to narrow down the choices!
FAIRYTALE INSPIRED STYLE DRESS - Wedding dresses with big skirts give a princess type vibe and really suit tiara type bridal headpieces. Anything with pearls, crystals or beading look really pretty with these type of headdresses. The bridal headbands below feature glass pearl beads, freshwater pearls and pretty organza flowers.
BOHO/FLOWING DRESSES - These dresses suit lots of styles such as delicate flower crowns, pretty vine headpieces or even just a flower comb. The emphasis should be on everything being light and informal, like the bridal headpiece has just been placed on the head without too many pins or hairspray!
MODERN DRESSES - With so many incredible wedding dress designers and makers there is a huge choice of styles and you can choose to wear whatever you want! Below are a selection of previous bespoke brides I have designed for who all chose something a bit different and all looked completely stunning!
VINTAGE DRESSES - Think 1920's/1930's bias cut dresses, 1940's structured floor length dresses,1950's knee length full skirts, 1960's mini dresses or 1970's flowing sleeves hippie style. So many types of wedding dresses to suit each decade whether its an original dress, a new interpretation of a vintage style or something that has elements of a certain period in time.
1920'S/1930'S wedding dresses - One of my favourite periods to design for, dresses from this era suit beaded headbands worn across the forehead of across the back of the head. I like to incorporate vintage jewellery into these styles which adds to the vintage look.
1940's wedding dresses - Another favourite era of mine, dresses from this period favoured long sleeves sometimes with a puff sleeve head, long skirts, details such as buttons and a nipped in waists with wider shoulders. Very elegant and in fact I designed my own wedding dress inspired by this period. Headpieces from the 1940's were often crowns in a halo shape, sometimes using wax flowers, pearls or lace.
1950's wedding dresses - A glamourous period in time with nipped in waists, full skirts, petticoats, nipped in waists and long sleeves. Another one of my favourite style of dresses these suit birdcage veils, bows and headbands.
1960's wedding dresses - Pillbox wedding hats were a popular style from this period and I love making mini versions of these which have proved quite popular over the years. They work so well with short, simple dresses and I have made them with detachable veils which give two different looks.
1970's wedding dresses - Long dresses with long flowing sleeves, ruffles, plunging necklines, seams under the bust, ruching, empire line have influenced the hippie/boho look of today. These styles look amazing with flower crowns, ribbons and natural, unstructured headpieces.
As wedding season approaches, I hope this blog assists you in exploring the huge choice of styles, making it simpler and more enjoyable to select the perfect bridal headpiece for your wedding dress!
